On a day when I’m flagging a bit and the items on my to-do list seem to be ganging up on me, I need to remember this quote.
Particularly as creatives, it’s very difficult to ‘wing it’ when energy levels are low. Apart from some rather surreal imagery and wordplay that seems to come when I am about to drop off to sleep (and I wish they’d invent something that let me record it all without moving) I don’t create good work when I’m tired and low on energy.
As the quote says, your body (which includes your mind) is much more efficient when it is full of energy.
I think we all know the things we’re supposed to do to improve and maintain energy levels – proper sleep, exercise, good diet, reducing stress and so on – but often doing it is another matter. It’s can also be hard when the brain convinces us we have a fantastic new idea to work on… late at night when we should be trying to sleep.
Yet the talent we have will thank us for looking after our bodies and doing what we can to maintain energy at the times we most need it.
Coupled with that, we need understand when our bodies are performing their best. We all have daily rhythms and times when we are better at certain tasks, more creative, and so on. Without falling into the trap of using this as one excuse to do nothing if we don’t feel like it, we can harness the times when we’re the most creative and productive, and do the humdrum tasks and chores at other times.
What do you do to keep your energy levels primed?
